SPRING WORKDAY 2006

DATE: 20 May 2006

TIME:  9:00am

LOCATION: Redford Cemetery

Unlike previous years, we held our major spring workday on the same day as the annual Gravesite Clean-Up/Planting day.  The cemetery was already looking better than ever, and we were able to keep the positive momentum up!  Over the course of nearly twelve hours, groups of volunteers came and worked at various projects, including cemetery beautification, brush clearing and chipping, and tree removal.  The final results were quite impressive!

In addition to the normal spring beautification activities, the goals for this workday were as follows:

    1. To clear the growth on the north fence line that has re-grown since last year's cleanup workdays.

    2. To continue to clear the north and east (rear) fence lines, including felling the dead ash tree.

    3. To take down the damaged willow tree on the north fence line, if we have enough hands available.

    4. To clean up rubbish from the cemetery grounds.

    5. Remove the dead Elm stump.

Due to the overwhelming presence of poison ivy on the north fence line, it was decided to focus on finishing the removal of undesirable trees and shrubs on the south and east fence lines instead.  The poison ivy will be sprayed with herbicide and once dead and inert, removed.  With the completion of the cleaning and clearing of the inside of the south fence line is now ready for replanting with desirable trees, shrubs, and flowers.  The replanting of Redford Cemetery will officially begin in fall of 2006.

Throughout the day volunteers of all ages worked to beautify the grounds.  Flowers were planted around family burial sites and around our historical marker, too.  At the end of the day there were some tired volunteers, lots of fresh woodchips and a cemetery that is looking better than ever!
